Subject : Constitution of Group on Telecommunications

Reference is invited to this Office Order of even number dated 20th November 1998 regarding constitution of the Group on Telecommunications (copy enclosed). It has now been directed by the Prime Minister that the Group of Telecommunications would have the following Members in addition to the Members already nominated:

  • Finance Minister
  • Minister of Information and Broadcasting
  • Minister of Communications

Subject : Constitution of Group on Telecommunications

The Prime Minister has directed that in the context of his announcement on October 24, 1998, a Group on Telecommunications should be constituted. The Government of India hereby constitutes the Group on Telecommunications (GOT) comprising the following :-

*  Dy. Chairman, Planning Commission Chairman
*  Member(Telecom), Planning Commission Member
*  Finance Secretary Member
*  Law Secretary Member
*  Secretary, Telecom Member
*  Member (Services), Telecom Commission Member
*  Member (Production), Telecom Commission Member
* Dr. N Seshagiri, DG, NIC Member
*  Dr. Rodham Narasimhan, Director,
    National Institute of Advanced Studies,
    IIS Complex, Bangalore		 Member
*  Dr. S. Rangarajan, Director,
    Satellite Communications, D/o Space		 Member
*  Director (Communications & Research),
    PMO		 Member
*  Secretary to PM Member-Secretary

2.  The GOT would make recommendations on the following :-

(a) Proposed New Telecom Policy,
(b) Issues relating to the existing licensees of basic and cellular services and suggest appropriate remedial measures within the framework of the New Telecom Policy,
(c) Issues relating to the TRAI.

3.  In making recommendations on New Telecom Policy (item no.2(a) above), the Group may hold wider discussion and interaction with Industry and Trade as well as with knowledgeable persons in the telecom sector, both official as well as non-official.

4.  The Group will submit its recommendations to the Prime Minister as early as possible.

5.  The Group will be serviced by the Department of Telecommunications.
